Voice issues starting 4/7/2023 thru 4/10/2023

Friday around 1PM we suddenly started getting notices of “problems with sound”

Inbound voice (callers to business/homes in Kitsap) were received fine, but outbound was horrible.

After spending the weekend and Monday hunting, we located a problem in the BGP routing between NoaNet -> Hurricane Electric -> Zayo (Ziply who owns iFiber and Wave). Our problem wasn’t on our network, not even in something we have control over. Our outbound voice was going to Taiwan before coming back to Seattle! What the heck? This is the joy of the internet, after a certain point; you are at the mercy of others.

After a few tickets, cross finger pointing and my upstream voice provider telling me “Open a ticket with your ISP”, to which I wrote “I am the ISP” we finally resolved it.

This is another example of why we need organizational redundancy. If I had had a completely seperate transport solution available, I could have routed our voice through a differant link. I am determined to make this happen. It just means I will never be the cheapest on the network. Net253 is the only provider with an ASN (core router) in Kitsap, all the other ISPs are dependent on NoaNet to get into/out of Kitsap.
