Spring Cleaning
We were installing service in the basement of 253 Winslow Way W, which is where the name Net253 came from. The building is eventually going to be torn down and turned into a hotel or redeveloped.
While running a new service drop, I took the moment to decomission/remove the old Net253 Core router and Core distribution switch.
The Cisco C3845 advanced router with triple dual 10/100mb modular bays and a 8 port gig switch was north of $16K back in the day. Sitting on top is a Dell PowerConnect 24 port gig with dual 10gig uplinks, a $3K switch.
Nowadays, a $120 router from Ubiquiti has more packet processing and ports than the $16K big boy, and sips only 10 watts. The Cisco was a space heater clocking in at 300 watts and about 55dB of fan noise. Our $300 24 port switches have more management and 4 10gig uplinks now, oh and use less than 40 watts and have no fan except when it is really hot in the room.
Our current core routers are switches are 10gbit, we are working to migrate to 100gbit. I thought you might find it interesting to see some of the real “sunk costs” of delivering your internet.
